Sustainability
Shaped by our connection to the land
Sustainability is an ongoing journey at Pennard House. We continue to review how we operate, how we support our team and suppliers, and how we care for the land.
We use renewable electricity, heat the house using biomass from sustainable sources, and actively care for the farm to encourage increased biodiversity. We prioritise local, seasonal food, reduce waste wherever possible and work with like‑minded suppliers.
By taking a thoughtful, long‑term approach, we aim to protect the house and its landscape while continuing to host warm, relaxed and deeply personal celebrations.
What we are doing:
The farm and estate sit at the heart of our sustainability journey. Over recent years we have planted more than 10,000 trees, set aside around 90 acres for rewilding and established 15 acres of wildflower meadows. We are in the process of creating new ponds and restoring hedgerows to strengthen habitats, support wildlife and connect the landscape. These long‑term projects help increase biodiversity, improve resilience and care for the land for future generations.
We use renewable electricity across the house, kitchens and Coach House, and heat the main house using biomass fuelled by sustainably managed estate woodlands. Alongside reducing energy use where possible, we are working to better understand the carbon impact of our operations and events, with the aim of developing a clear pathway towards becoming a carbon‑neutral wedding and events venue.
We prioritise local and seasonal ingredients wherever possible, supporting Somerset farmers, producers and small businesses while reducing food miles. We recycle all waste where possible, and send food waste to anaerobic digester.
Looking ahead and what we’re working towards
As we continue along our sustainability journey, we have a number of aims.
We are looking to gain a better understanding and measurement of the carbon impact of our operations and events at Pennard House. Our aim is to establishing a clear carbon footprint baseline and through tree planting and other steps, to help develop a pathway towards carbon neutrality as a wedding and events venue.
Alongside this, we aim to support our couples to make thoughtful, lower‑impact choices around décor, flowers and materials, and deepen conversations with suppliers about their own sustainability practices.
On the farm, we are continuing careful management of woodlands and meadows, creating new ponds and hedgerows, aiming for habitat creation and improved biodiversity across the estate.
