This enthralling day course is the second of a series of standalone courses with historian Mike Shaw which consider how our modern understanding of the world took shape.
Following the early voyages of discovery, the Portuguese and Spanish powers had divided the newly discovered worlds between themselves with papal approval at the Treaty of Saragossa. This was to be contested by the emerging Protestant powers of northern Europe led initially by the Dutch and later the English. This day course compares the development of all the European merchant empires to see how and why some prospered and others failed.
